The following information gives a brief outline
of the content of GCSE subjects which we offer.
Core Subjects are English and Mathematics,
but we also expect students to take at least one science subject
and a modern foreign language.
Biology, Chemistry and Physics
are taught separately and it is a requirement that at least one
of the three be taken at GCSE level. Each subject has its own well-equipped
laboratory and experienced specialist staff supported by a laboratory
technician.
This ensures that a wide range of practical work is undertaken throughout
the course. We feel it is essential that the sciences are studied
separately in order to provide a sound basis for A-level studies.
French is taught from Year 7 and Spanish
from Year 8. It is a requirement that at least one language is taken
to GCSE level. Emphasis is placed on developing confidence in oral
and written skills. This is underlined by all our specialist language
teachers who communicate mainly in the language studied. Frequent
educational visits to both France and Spain are undertaken.
Information Technology is of major importance and
the students learn, from an early age, how to use the extensive
software packages which are available in our IT Suites. Although
a GCSE subject in its own right, Information Computer Technology
and almost unlimited, screened Internet access is used throughout
the school as a learning tool.
Music
and Drama combine to provide opportunities for students
interested in singing in a choir, playing a musical instrument,
dancing or acting, to take part in a wide variety of music and dramatic
productions.
Art plays an important part within the curriculum
and many areas of the school are enhanced by the work of the students
in a range of media.
The teachers encourage a general appreciation and understanding
of a wide variety of the arts among all pupils as well as nurturing
the specially gifted. All three subjects are offered at GCSE.
PHSE incorporates Citizenship
and religious as well as social and health
education. The course enables the young people to understand
themselves, keep healthy, develop their relationships, and understand
their rights and responsibilities as citizens. It also gives a sound
understanding of the Christian faith, as well as an awareness and
appreciation of the beliefs of others.
The following subjects are also offered at GCSE -English
Literature, History, Geography.
All of these subjects combine to form a well-balanced curriculum
for our students. Specialist staff are enthusiastic and every effort
is made to present the subjects in an enjoyable and accessible way.
A close working relationship between school and home is essential
as the student’s educational welfare is seen as a joint responsibility.
