Teaching is closely related to the National
Curriculum Key Stages 3 and 4 (GCSE). Class sizes are carefully
regulated to ensure the optimum pupil to teacher ratio.
We believe that the students should have access to the widest curriculum
for as long as possible and so we offer a range of subjects which
include three separate sciences, two languages (French and Spanish),
drama, music and art, ICT, PE, history and geography, PSHE (which
includes citizenship), as well as the core subjects of mathematics
and English.
At the end of year 9, after extensive consultation with parents
and students to ensure a balanced curriculum, optional subjects
are chosen.
Most students take nine subjects to GCSE level. Careers advice is
available at any stage in Senior School.
There
are regular reviews of progress when teachers assess each subject.
At the end of Autumn and Summer terms, formal examinations are undertaken.
At the end of each term written reports are sent to parents and
parents evenings are held.
A wide range of homework is set including written assignments, research,
revision, reading and projects.
Students in Years 10 and 11 are closely monitored by their personal
tutors and these monitoring reports are communicated to parents.
The emphasis is on effort and the school aims to ensure progress
through encouragement. The achievements of the Senior School pupils,
as well as GCSE students are celebrated at our annual Prize Day
in October at Huddersfield Town Hall.
