Pupils enter the Senior School at age 11 (at
the beginning of Year 7) either from the Preparatory School or from
other independent and state primary schools. Although Huddersfield
Grammar School is nonselective and caters for pupils with a wide
range of ability, applicants are required to sit a diagnostic test
and to attend an interview. This allows us to determine the appropriateness
of the school for the child and to help us make provision for both
their academic and personal needs. It is on the basis of the test
and interview that academic scholarships are awarded.
Our goal is to have prepared young people,
by the age of 16, to achieve the best possible GCSE results which
will allow them to choose to progress to further education or to
move confidently into the world of work
We believe that young people learn best in an atmosphere of co-operation
and enjoyment of learning and that this can only be achieved in
an environment where each person
is valued as an individual
is able to develop confidence in their own
ideas, abilities and interests
can develop a close working relationship
with their peers and their teachers.
This
can only be achieved in a school which is relatively small where
all pupils and staff know and support each other in all aspects
of school life. Pupils entering the Senior School are enabled to
progress through the support of highly qualified and enthusiastic
staff. Class sizes are small which allow progress to be carefully
monitored and additional help given on an individual basis to support
each student.
